Corticostriatal coordination through coherent phase-amplitude coupling.

چکیده
The corticostriatal axis is the main input stage of the basal ganglia and is crucial for their role in motor behavior. Synchronized oscillations might mediate interactions between cortex and striatum during behavior, yet direct evidence remains sparse. Here, we show that, during motor behavior, low- and high-frequency oscillations jointly couple cortex and striatum via cross-frequency interactions. We investigated neuronal oscillations along the corticostriatal axis in rats during rest and treadmill running. We found prominent theta and gamma oscillations in cortex and striatum, the peak frequencies of which scaled with motor demand. Theta and gamma oscillations were functionally coupled through phase-amplitude coupling. Furthermore, theta oscillations were phase coupled between structures. Together, local phase-amplitude coupling and corticostriatal theta phase coupling mediated the temporal correlation of gamma bursts between the cortex and striatum. The coordination of fast oscillations through coherent phase-amplitude coupling may be a general mechanism to regulate neuronal interactions along the corticostriatal axis and beyond.

Analysis of Oscillation Amplitude and Phase Error in Multiphase LC Oscillators
Abstract This work proposes a novel method to find the phase error and oscillation amplitude in multiphase LC oscillators. A mathematical approach is used to find the relationship between every stage's output phase and its coupling factor. To much more general analysis, every stage assumed to have a different coupling factor. The mismatches in LC tanks are considered as the main source of pha...
متن کاملControl of amplitude chimeras by time delay in dynamical networks
We investigate the influence of time-delayed coupling in a ring network of non-locally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators upon chimera states, i.e., space-time patterns with coexisting partially coherent and partially incoherent domains. We focus on amplitude chimeras which exhibit incoherent behavior with respect to the amplitude rather than the phase and are transient patterns, and show that t...
متن کاملPhase coherent transmission through interacting mesoscopic systems
This is a review of the phase coherent transmission through interacting mesoscopic conductors. As a paradigm we study the transmission amplitude and the dephasing rate for electron transport through a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. We summarize experimental and theoretical work devoted to the phase of the transmission amplitude. It is shown that the evolution of the transmission ph...
متن کاملMedial prefrontal theta phase coupling during spatial memory retrieval
Memory retrieval is believed to involve a disparate network of areas, including medial prefrontal and medial temporal cortices, but the mechanisms underlying their coordination remain elusive. One suggestion is that oscillatory coherence mediates inter-regional communication, implicating theta phase and theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling in mnemonic function across species. To examine this hy...
متن کاملCoherent and incoherent quantum stochastic resonance.
We study quantum stochastic resonance (QSR) in the periodically driven biased spin-boson system. The amplitude and the phase of the nonlinear response function vs temperature are studied in the incoherent and coherent tunneling regimes, encompassing adiabatic and nonadiabatic driving, weak and strong Ohmic coupling a. For a 1y2 we present exact QSR results. As a general feature, a principal m...
